Comparison of Imaging Techniques

Brightfield, COL, DG, Wilska Phase, Rheinberg etc.

Here are some pictures aimed at comparing different imaging techniques. They were taken under matched conditions using:

Watson Bactil Binocular Microscope
Aiptek Pocket Cam 3 Mega on one eyetube of binocular
Objective: Watson 30x parachromat, NA 0.5
Ocular: Olympus P15

I have called the phase contrast technique I am using "Wilska Phase Contrast" after Prof. A. Wilska who described the technique in Nature, 1953. I am currently trying to optimise the method for looking at transparent beasties such as protozoa etc. It adds another tool to visualise details that other techniques may not, and has the advantage of costing nothing.

Each row of thumbnails is a different individual viewed by different techniques
